  1. Pipe stripes of icing horizontally across the cookie.
  2. Pipe two stripes of each color and then alternate the colors creating a pattern.

PRO TIP: Pipe a white outline around the entire edge of the boot cookie if you are having trouble piping your horizontal colored stripes the same length. This will give the cookie a clear and defined edge.

Decorate an Umbrella Cookie with Buttercream Icing

  1. Pipe an outline starting at the center point of the top of the umbrella and using the scallops as your guide on the bottom. Outline two vertical sections, dividing the umbrella into five different sections total.
  2. Fill in the vertical sections using a back and forth motion, creating horizontal lines of icing.
  3. Sprinkle these two center sections with sanding sugar. Shake off the excess.
  4. Pipe an outline around the three remaining vertical sections, starting at the center point of the top of the umbrella and using the scallops as your guide on the bottom.
  5. Fill in the vertical sections using a back and forth motion, creating horizontal lines of icing.
  6. Pipe an outline around the finial at the top.
  7. Fill in the finial using a back and forth motion, creating horizontal lines of icing.
  8. Pipe an outline around the handle at the bottom.
  9. Fill in the handle using a back and forth motion, creating horizontal lines of icing.
  10. Pipe random dots of color on the three vertical sections on the outsides and center of the umbrella.

PRO TIP: Place your cookie in a coffee filter to catch the sanding sugar as you sprinkle it over the icing. This keeps your decorating table clean and allows you to easily pour the excess sanding sugar back into its container. Or, consider filling a shallow bowl or plate with sanding sugar. Hold the umbrella cookie upside down and lightly press the cookie into the sanding sugar so that it sticks to the icing.
