Cookie Cards: Sugar Cookie Decorating Guides

Use my Cookie Cards below as a guide to decorate your Spring Showers sugar cookies. Step by step photos plus written instructions give you all the details that you need to create beautifully decorated sugar cookies of your own.

Decorate a Sun Cookie with Royal Icing

  • Pipe a circle outline around the edge of the cookie, just inside the rays.
  • Following the outline, flood the entire circle working towards the center.
  • Give the cookie a gentle shake by moving it back and forth to even out the royal icing. If needed, use a toothpick or scribe tool to move the icing around on the cookie to fill in any gaps or holes.
  • Let the base layer of royal icing dry for at least 20 minutes before you add top layers and adjacent sections. You can speed up the drying time of your royal icing by using a small table fan or dehydrator on the lowest setting.
  • Starting at the outer edge of the circle, pipe a straight line from the center of each triangle out to the point to create the rays.
  • Pipe a straight line in the center top half of the circle to create the top of the sunglasses.
  • Underneath the straight line, pipe two half circles for the shades and fill in.
  • Pipe a curved smile.

PRO TIP: Use the rim of a cup or a circle cookie cutter the same size as the center of the cookie to gently press a guide into the top of the cookie for a perfect circle outline for the sun.

Decorate a Rain Boot Cookie with Royal Icing using the Wet on Wet Technique

  • Pipe an outline around the edge of the cookie, leaving blank cookie space on the top for trim and on the bottom for the heel and sole.
  • Following the outline, flood the cookie working towards the center.
  • Give the cookie a gentle shake by moving it back and forth to even out the royal icing. If needed, use a toothpick or scribe tool to move the icing around on the cookie to fill in any gaps or holes.
  • While the base layer of royal icing is still wet, pipe the polka dots. Let the polka dots sink into the base layer of royal icing. If needed, use a toothpick or scribe tool to poke each dot down.
  • Let the base layer of royal icing dry for at least 20 minutes before you add top layers and adjacent sections. You can speed up the drying time of your royal icing by using a small table fan or dehydrator on the lowest setting.
  • Pipe an outline around the top trim and fill in.
  • Pipe an outline around the sole & heel and fill in.
  • Pipe trim detail lines on the main section of the boot.

PRO TIP: To achieve a seamlessly smooth wet on wet design, flood the cookie quickly and then add the design while the base layer of royal icing is still wet. This creates a flat design that looks like a background pattern rather than a raised top design on the cookie.

Decorate an Umbrella Cookie with Royal Icing using the Marbling Technique

  1. Flood the cookie in stripes using alternating colors in whichever combination you desire. Start at the top and work your way down to the bottom creating stripes of color with similar widths. For the last stripe, pipe a scalloped edge on the bottom.
  2. Using a toothpick or scribe tool , scrape a line through the icing in the center of the cookie from top to bottom. Scrape two more lines through the icing from top to bottom, each on either side of the center line, essentially dividing the cookie into four sections.
  3. Scrape four more lines through the icing in between the three lines that you created in step 2, but this time scrape from bottom to top.
  4. Give the cookie a gentle shake by moving it back and forth to even out the royal icing. If needed, use a toothpick or scribe tool to move the icing around on the cookie to fill in any gaps or holes.
  5. Let the base layer of royal icing dry for at least 20 minutes before you add top layers and adjacent sections. You can speed up the drying time of your royal icing by using a small table fan or dehydrator on the lowest setting.
  6. Pipe an outline around the finial at the top and fill in.
  7. Pipe an outline around the handle at the bottom and fill in.
  8. Pipe an outline around the entire umbrella shade.
  9. Pipe two vertical lines starting at the top center point and fanning out on the bottom to divide the shade into three sections.

PRO TIP: To achieve a seamlessly smooth marbling design, flood the cookie quickly and marble with a toothpick or scribe tool immediately before the royal icing begins to dry.
