Cookie Cards: Sugar Cookie Decorating Guides
Use my Cookie Cards below as a guide to decorate your Summer sugar cookies. Step by step photos plus written instructions give you all the details that you need to create beautifully decorated sugar cookies of your own.
Decorate a Sun Cookie with Buttercream Icing
- Pipe a circle outline around the edge of the cookie, just inside the rays.
- Fill in the center circle using a back and forth motion, creating horizontal lines of icing.
- Outline alternating triangle rays.
- Fill in each alternating ray individually using a back and forth motion, creating horizontal lines of icing.
- For the remaining alternating rays, starting at the outer edge of the circle, pipe a straight line from the center of each triangle out to the point to create the rays.
- Pipe two half circles in the center top half of the sun to create the lenses of the sunglasses. Fill in with a horizontal back and forth motion.
- Pipe a connecting line for the nose bridge of the glasses.
- Pipe a curved smile and dots for rosy cheeks.
PRO TIP: For an alternate design, decorate this cookie as a flower instead of a sun. Make each ray a petal by starting in the center of the cookie and piping to the edge of each triangle point. Outline and fill each petal one at a time. Then pipe and fill a circle in the center.
Decorate a Sunglasses Cookie with Buttercream Icing
- Pipe a half circle outline for each lens just inside the edge of the cookie, leaving blank cookie space all around for the frames of the sunglasses.
- Fill in the lenses using a back and forth motion, creating horizontal lines of icing.
- Pipe an outline around the entire outside of the cookie and around the lenses.
- Fill in the frames using a back and forth motion, creating horizontal lines of icing.
- Using the same color as the frames, pipe 3 horizontal lines across each lens, beginning with the center line.
- Pipe flower shaped "screws" in each corner of the frames by piping 5 small dots for petals and 1 dot in a different color for the center.
PRO TIP: Be sure to cut the openings of the icing bags small enough to be able to achieve the tiny detailed flower "screws."
Decorate a Watermelon Cookie with Buttercream Icing
- Pipe an outline along the bottom rounded edge of the cookie, creating a half circle. Pipe a second outline slightly inside the first to create the rind.
- Fill in the rind using a back and forth motion, creating lines of icing.
- Pipe an outline along the top of the cookie and just inside the rind section.
- Fill in the flesh of the watermelon using a back and forth motion, creating horizontal lines of icing.
- Pipe small teardrops for seeds.
PRO TIP: For a fun and deliciously crunchy addition, use sprinkles instead of icing for the watermelon seeds.
