Use my Cookie Cards below as a guide to decorate your St. Patrick's Day sugar cookies. Step by step photos plus written instructions give you all the details that you need to create beautifully decorated sugar cookies of your own.
Decorate a Shamrock Cookie
with Buttercream Icing
- Pipe an outline around the center section of the cookie, including the stem.
- Fill in the center section using a back and forth motion, creating horizontal lines of icing.
- Pipe an outline around the left side of the cookie.
- Fill in the left section using a back and forth motion, creating horizontal lines of icing.
- Pipe an outline around the right side of the cookie.
- Fill in the right section using a back and forth motion, creating horizontal lines of icing.

PRO TIP: For an alternate design, outline the three heart shapes of each petal of the shamrock, with the points of each heart meeting together at the stem. Fill in the outlined heart petals with a back and forth motion.
Decorate a Leprechaun Mustache Cookie
with Buttercream Icing
- Pipe an outline around the entire cookie.
- Pipe a vertical line down the center of the cookie to separate the left and right sides of the mustache.
- Fill in the left side of the cookie using a back and forth motion, creating horizontal lines of icing.
- Fill in the right side of the cookie using a back and forth motion, creating horizontal lines of icing.
- Pipe a decorative outline around the top of the mustache.
- Pipe a decorative outline around the bottom of mustache, starting at the left tip. When you get to the center, curve the line into a swirl.
- Pipe an additional swirl in between the top outline and the bottom swirl.
- Pipe a decorative outline around the bottom of mustache, starting at the right tip, When you get to the center, curve the line into a swirl.
- Pipe an additional swirl in between the top outline and the bottom swirl.

PRO TIP: For a curly textured mustache, outline each side of the mustache with a line down the center. Then, instead of a back and forth motion, fill in each side with wavy swirls following the shape of the cookie.
Decorate a Rainbow Cookie
with Buttercream Icing
- Pipe an outline around the cloud on the right. Fill in the cloud using a stippling motion, giving the cloud lots of texture.
- Fill in the cloud on the left by piping large dots to mimic pieces of gold.
- Using a swirling motion, create an arched stripe along the top of the center rainbow section of the cookie. Repeat a second row of swirls.
- Switch to a second color of icing and pipe 2 more arched lines of swirls.
- Switch to a third color of icing and pipe 2 final arched lines of swirls.

PRO TIP: For less texture, and icing, decorate the cookie by outlining the different sections and then filling them in with a back and forth motion instead of swirls and dots.
