Cookie Cards: Sugar Cookie Decorating Guides

Use my Cookie Cards below as a guide to decorate your St. Patrick's Day sugar cookies. Step by step photos plus written instructions give you all the details that you need to create beautifully decorated sugar cookies of your own.

Decorate a Rainbow Cookie with Royal Icing

  • Pipe an outline around the clouds.
  • Following the outline, flood the clouds working towards the center.
  • Give the cookie a gentle shake by moving it back and forth to even out the royal icing. If needed, use a toothpick or scribe tool to move the icing around on the cookie to fill in any gaps or holes.
  • Let the royal icing dry for at least 20 minutes before you add top layers and adjacent sections. You can speed up the drying time of your royal icing by using a small table fan or dehydrator on the lowest setting.
  • Pipe an arched outline around the center rainbow section of the cookie. Flood the center section. Let dry for 20 minutes.
  • Pipe an outline around the top of the rainbow. Flood the top rainbow section.
  • Pipe an outline around the bottom of the rainbow. Flood the bottom rainbow section.
  • Pipe a decorative outline around the clouds.

PRO TIP: For a quicker design to complete, decorate the arched rainbow stripes one after another, without any drying time. This will make the colors look like a seamless gradient verses different sections of the cookie.

Decorate a Leprechaun Mustache Cookie with Royal Icing

  • Pipe an outline around the edge of the cookie.
  • Following the outline, flood the cookie, working towards the center.
  • Pipe a vertical line down the center of the cookie to separate the left and right sides of the mustache.
  • Pipe 4-5 wavy lines on the left side of the cookie, using the shape of the cookie as a guide, mimicking the look of strands of hair.
  • Pipe 4-5 wavy lines on the right side of the cookie, using the shape of the cookie as a guide, mimicking the look of strands of hair.

PRO TIP: For a simpler design, start by outlining and flooding the sides of the mustache separately, letting the first side dry 20 minutes before completing the second side. This creates dimension and makes them truly look like two separate sides of the mustache.

Decorate a Shamrock Cookie with Royal Icing using the Wet on Wet Technique

  • Pipe an outline around the edge of the cookie.
  • Following the outline, flood the cookie working towards the center.
  • Give the cookie a gentle shake by moving it back and forth to even out the royal icing. If needed, use a toothpick or scribe tool to move the icing around on the cookie to fill in any gaps or holes.
  • While the base layer of royal icing is still wet, pipe the polka dots.
  • Give the cookie a gentle shake by moving it back and forth to even out the royal icing. If needed, use a toothpick or scribe tool to poke down the polka dots. Let dry for 20 minutes.
  • Pipe a decorative outline around the edge of the cookie, piping a small swirl as you come to the center point of each petal of the shamrock.

PRO TIP: To achieve a seamlessly smooth wet on wet design, flood the cookie quickly and then add the polka dots while the base layer of royal icing is still wet. This creates a flat design that looks like a background.
